The history of downy mildew control began with an accidental discovery in 1882. In order to prevent passersby from eating from grapevines close to the road, Pierre-Marie-Alexis Millardet sprayed those vines with a mixture of copper sulfate and lime, which was both seeable and awful-tasting. He then noticed that the treated grapevines did not show any symptoms of downy mildew



So hmm. Interesting they chose this species to test on considering copper pulls off it's antibacterial antifungal properties we've discussed. However

Copper-based control methods are still commonly used today



So it sounds like the current treatment is effective. Dont get hung up on the idea of this specific genus though. This is just the tip.

Today scientific break throughs have been achieved here propelling man kind forward. Very exciting stuff. Congratulations are in order here.
