Part of the problem (IMO) is that news has turned into 24/7 entertainment thanks to cable and the internet (constant updates of what used to be print only news). For revenue purposes they have to throw the story out there before their competitors. To beat everyone else to the headline, real fact-checking and (hence) the truth be damned.
