Perpetuus looking pretty sketchy:

Isle of Wight tidal energy scheme 'put on hold'

About Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre

?The Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC) is a state-of-the-art tidal energy generation project that will reinforce the UK’s position as a world leader in marine renewables. This transformational project will use world leading turbine technologies to produce 30MW of clean, safe, renewable energy. PTEC is the largest consented tidal stream energy project in England and Wales.
Evidence from another UK tidal power project, the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC), suggests that PTEC could create hundreds of jobs and attract significant investment into the local economy. According to EMEC, in EMEC’s first 10 years of operation, direct jobs in the marine energy sector in Orkney grew to 250. PTEC’s offshore site will lie around 2.5km (1.3 nautical miles) south of St Catherine’s Point, Isle of Wight, and could generate electricity to power more than 15,000 homes.

PTEC represents a new era in tidal energy production. Their unique model enables them to produce reliable electricity at a lower price and risk than existing tidal projects. It will accelerate the UK’s adoption and understanding of tidal energy, and reinforce its standing as a world leader in marine renewables. Global turbine manufacturers and supply chain companies are already showing interest in and commitment to the development. It is hoped it will be operational during 2021.

Plans for a large tidal energy scheme in the English Channel have been put on hold, Isle of Wight Council has said.

Perpetuus Tidal Energy Centre (PTEC) had previously said it would begin "full operations" south of the island from 2020.

It has not bid for a government contract to supply energy by the year 2023, the authority revealed.

Isle of Wight Council said all work was "in abeyance" because PTEC was unable to compete on price with offshore wind.

The authority, which made a £1m unsecured loan to PTEC in 2013, said the money might never be repaid.

In April 2016, PTEC secured approval for up to 60 sea bed turbines off St Catherine's Point.

The company had said the 30-megawatt project would demonstrate the potential for "the commercialisation of tidal energy".
