Purchasing the right software is more complicated then someone may think. I can only speak from my experience as an IT executive who lives this every day. Before I make a purchase I first consult with other IT professionals with a similar network environment. I take note of their feedback and ask what they like and don't like about the software. I then check the companies business background and always look at the most recent awards they've received. If I have time I will see if there are any specific convention or trade shows.
