Yet another study showing that current In-vitro models championing the low wear rates of ZTA are exceptionally flawed. ZTA wear rates are increased from corrosion at the taper due to hardening of titanium stems and softening of ZTA heads. This also produces metallic wear particles that collect on the ZTA head and liner. That collection of metal particles in the head and liner grinds away increasing ZTA wear and causes phase instability which also contributes to increased wear. The detrimental aspects of ZTA are all dismissed because its believed that wear rates are not clinically relavant based on in-vitro models. However there are more factors that need to be factored in. Researchers may need to reexamine the real levels of wear to determine how clinically relavant ZTA wear is.
