Lislegard responds to PolyMet comments

McCollum urged to not cater to special interest groups

AURORA — Iron Range Rep. Dave Lislegard responded Friday to a fellow lawmaker’s comments regarding the integrity of the environmental review process for PolyMet’s proposal for the Minnesota’s first copper-nickel mine.

U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum, a Democratic who represents the state’s 4th congressional district and chairs an appropriations subcommittee, said earlier this week that she wants to know why the federal Environmental Protection Agency didn’t hold a comment period on a water pollution permit for the project. Her committee has jurisdiction over the EPA.

McCollum called it “remarkable” that the agency didn’t formally weigh in before the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued permits last month. Paula Maccabee, a lawyer for Duluth-based environmental group WaterLegacy, questioned if the EPA suppressed comments against the project.

Lislegard, DFL-Aurora, cautioned the congresswoman against using her new position, a power she gained when Democrats took control of the House after November’s midterm elections, to cater to special interest groups.

“It’s extremely disappointing but not unexpected, considering Congresswoman McCollum’s ties to the extreme environmentalists opposed to mining,” Lislegard said during an interview Friday. “PolyMet has gone through rigorous environmental reviews for more than a decade and received tens of thousands of comments on its state permits.”

McCollum’s comments setup a potential clash within Congress, similar to her inter-party sparring with Congressman Rick Nolan in past years. Nolan’s successor, U.S. Republican Rep. Pete Stauber, introduced a bill to authorize the PolyMet land exchange with the U.S. Forest Service, and has a been an advocate for the project.

Lislegard, the former mayor of Aurora, has long been a champion for PolyMet. The project is expected to bring 300 direct jobs and hundreds more indirect jobs to the former LTV site near Hoyt Lakes. If operational, it is expected to be a boom to cities like Aurora and Hoyt Lakes, which have been economically devastated since LTV closed in 2001.
