Denmark: Mass exports of cannabis allowed

Denmark releases the export of pharmaceutical cannabis – without restricting quantities. However, a license is required for production. The small kingdom in the north of Europe is interesting for foreign cannabis companies to reach the EU market. But even in Denmark, there are still difficulties in supplying patients with cannabis as medicine.

Denmark: Mass exports of cannabis allowed

On January 1, 2019, Denmark issued a regulation authorizing mass deliveries of pharmaceutical cannabis, according to media reports. Mass exports of Danish medical hemp are now allowed in any form and quantity, provided the necessary permits are in place.

Denmark legalised cannabis as medicine in 2018

As early as 1 January 2018, a development programmed has been introduced to enable manufacturers to apply to the Danish Medicines Agency for a license to cultivate and deal with medical cannabis products. (Leafly.de reported.) Denmark is one of the few countries in Europe to allow the production of cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Good conditions for cannabis cultivation

Denmark legalized cannabis as a medicine in January 2018 by a unanimous vote in the Danish parliament. Since legalization, the Danish government has provided significant support for cannabis development in the form of research subsidies and tax incentives. In this way, the country was able to rapidly become one of the leading European nations in the field of the cultivation of medicinal cannabis.

Denmark is an attractive country for the cannabis industry. Market observers see many positive basic prerequisites for the business of cannabis: First, the government is positive about pharmaceutical cannabis. In addition, the country has expertise in plant breeding and genetics. In addition, the health care system is excellent and there is a good pharmacy network.

Canadian cannabis companies in Denmark

The Canadian company ICC International Cannabis Corp has one of the few Danish licenses for medical cannabis. The company therefore welcomes the country's new export provision. Especially as access to the European Union is made possible by the revised Danish rules.

We reported last year that the Canadian cannabis company The Green Organic Dutchman (TGOD) is entering cannabis production for the European market. TGOD is cooperating with the Danish large-scale nursery Knud JEPSEN which has large production facilities and is involved in research and development.

What are the challenges for cannabis as a medicine in Denmark?

Cannabis as a medicine also faces challenges in Denmark, as Leafly.de reported.

The country has – like Germany also – the problem that few doctors so far are willing to prescribe cannabis on prescription. In Denmark, some researchers and prescribing doctors have joined forces in a forum, the Clinical Cannabis Forum. This could increase both expertise and acceptance.

Another barrier to the use of pharmaceutical cannabis is price. In Denmark, only palliative care patients receive a 100% reimbursement from health insurance companies. The other cannabis patients, on the other hand, receive only one grant. However, Danes can hope that medical hemp prices will fall in the future as a result of the larger production volumes.
