Hi Al, just so you know, those ranchers are standing in front of part of the 20% of the border in Arizona that doesn't have decent physical barriers.

The other 80% has some sort of physical barrier although a lot of it is just to prevent vehicles from crossing in places that are difficult to walk to and easy for border patrol agents to apprehend. I've never said the border is secure, but I have said, and of course Fox News would never say, that the barriers put in place so far have caused a 75% drop in illegal border crossings. Actually way higher when you exclude the huge number of illegal border crossings now occurring near Laredo and McAllen. But in Arizona there's been about an 85% decrease. Not bad huh ?

The Arizona-Mexico border spans approximately 370 miles, but only a third of it has fencing designed to stop people on foot.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, the international boundary in Arizona features 123.2 miles of pedestrian fencing, like the tall bollard-style fence in Nogales, Arizona.

Another 183.2 miles, or 49 percent of the Arizona-Mexico border, are covered with vehicle fencing. This type of fencing includes “Normandy fencing,” X-shaped barricades used on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day and intended to stop only vehicles.

The remaining 64 miles has no barrier at all. The un-barricaded land is in areas where there are natural barriers, like mountains, Border Patrol officials say.

In a lot of these places, the Border patrol would rather just use night vision/motion detection/etc. and then apprehend the illegal crossers. the problem now is that strategy doesn't work well when the border crossers are families requesting asylum.
