Ins101: Tis I
I have been doing commercial roofing for 27 years.
Own my own business

Presonally i dont see it as a benifit...
Dont get me wrong here.
1)watertightness
2)longgevity
3)how roofing materials hold up to the
weather elements, are the most important to the
roofer and the customer.
As far as residential, you have mostly
1)asphalt composite shingle
Converting to plastic type shingle will be a an asthetic problem. (IMHO)
Coomercial roofing there are:
1)Modified bitumen roof systems: rolled roofing a composite of ashphalt and rubber. (this is what i use mainly) I have installed well over 3 million sqft of the stuff)
2) pvc roof systems: composite of plastics (a sheet good)
3) epdm roof systems. a composite of different rubbers, to make a sheet good. History originated during oil embargo in the 70's when tire companies werent selling tires...they developed , this system.
These are the main systems being used.
Just my thoughts...thats all, It is interesting though.
Thanks for bringing it to the Boards attention.

There's a lengthy process to get a roofing product approved.
Just like anything else.

Best of luck to you,
Boomer
