Stauber introduces legislation to codify PolyMet, U.S. Forest Service land exchange

WASHINGTON, D.C. — 8th Congressional District Congressman Pete Stauber has introduced his first piece of legislation, which would move Polymet another step closer to “responsibly developing the NorthMet ore body in Northeast Minnesota.”

On Monday, Stauber introduced H.R. 527, the Superior National Forest Land Exchange Act of 2019, which would provide legal certainty by codifying–or arranging laws or rules into a systematic code–the land exchange between the two entities.

The legislation would codify the exchange of about 6,650 acres of federally-owned surface land above and around the Northmet ore body to Polymet, and 6,690 acres of private land to the U.S. Forest Service.

The land intended for the USFS is of higher appraised value, and would give visitors of the Superior National Forest increased access to trails and recreation.

Project leaders still need one major permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers before moving ahead with the project, which would be near Hoyt Lakes, MN.
