"That's interesting, I didn't realize it would be that quick." I was shocked by that article and made some effort to confirm it. Stocks, even in 1929 paid high dividends by modern standards. And a small number continued paying dividends thru the Great Depression.

Another interesting thing about the depression: The cost of living fell about 1/3. So if you put cash in the mattress in 1929 earning nothing, you'd actually do well in terms of buying power.

Of course all that supposes that you kept your job and your investments intact which few did. Something like 15% of banks failed. Home prices dropped. Hitler came to power.

I knew a lot of old relatives who spoke of the 1930s, rarely fondly. My dad actually made good money then, but he was young, single, smart... and damn lucky.
