That sounds like the 'Nifty Fifty' period, back in the late 1960s, when a group of 50 must own growth stocks were all the rage, like the recent FAANGS. I remember most of those got slaughtered during the big 1973/74 bear market, and I think Polaroid lost something like 90% before the carnage was over.

I starting off in investing in the 1980s when you could get over 12% on Treasuries, so I mainly put my IRA in bonds (zero coupon Treasuries), even though stocks were doing even better. I finally started expanding into stocks, but then came the 1987 crash.

I had some Amgen back when it was still a little known company, but unfortunately sold after a 20% gain. I figured it out years later that my 100 shares ($1700) would have been worth $65,000, and probably more by now. I guess everyone has those stories, the 'one that got away'..
