Years ago I dated a guy who worked on the trawlers for a large company that fished off the east coast here in Canada. I remember him telling me about how they put the by catch through a grinder. But I also recall him saying that ocassionally, while they were out fishing, that their quotas would get changed (for whatever reason I don't know) and sometimes they even had to dump some of their catch. And I remember thinking "What a tremendous waste!"
