An example of a minimally invasive product that researchers hope to bring to the consumer market within the next couple of years is the iTBra, manufactured by Reno, Nevada-based Cyrcadia Health. Currently in pre-FDA approval validation trials, the bra consists of a patch for each breast that measures temperature changes in breast tissue. A woman would need to wear the patches for only two to 12 hours a month to catch these changes. If this technology could replace painful mammograms and reduce premature biopsies, millions of women would be happier, noted Vinitha Sree Subbhuraam, director of Cyrcadia’s Customer Analytic Core Lab. The company claims that in initial trials the accuracy rate has been 87 percent in identifying known breast cancer cases.

Subbhuraam said the temperature signal reaches the breast surface regardless of the density of breast tissue or the depth of a tumor, and the bra can detect cancers before they are visible on mammograms and ultrasound images. The data can be transmitted to a woman’s doctor and if results are concerning, watchful monitoring or follow-up tests can be conducted. Subbhuraam hopes to introduce the iTBra in India, where, she said, women are especially shy about visiting doctors. If they could use this device in the comfort of their home every month, they could at least know there was a problem before visiting a doctor, Subbhuraam said.
