NY’s Incoming AG Plans Massive Probes of Trump And His Family

While many of those on the left have expressed concern that the president and his family may be found to have committed multiple crimes, but eventually receive pardons, the incoming attorney general in New York may very well be their saving grace.

As you may be aware, only federal crimes are pardonable by the President of the United States, meaning that if a federal crime is committed by a Trump family member, Trump could easily pardon those crimes.

Additionally, if Trump was to resign, Mike Pence or his successor could theoretically pardon him of federal crimes as well. State crimes, however, can not be pardoned by anyone but the Governor of the state in which the crimes were committed and charged.

Incoming New York Attorney General Letitia James has promised sweeping investigations into both the Trump family and the president himself after she takes office next month.

“We will use every area of the law to investigate President Trump and his business transactions and that of his family as well,” explained the incoming Democrat to NBC News.

James even went further, outlining to NBC some of the areas where she plans to thoroughly investigate the president, his family and his businesses. They are as follows:

* 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russian attorney

* The Trump Foundation

* Government subsidies received by Trump and his businesses

* The president’s finances, centering around his real estate holdings in the state

* Emoluments clause violations in New York

In addition to her promise of sweeping investigations into the Trump family, James also has campaigned on passing a bill which would change the state’s double jeopardy laws, meaning that if Trump or his family are charged with crimes on the federal level and then pardoned, prosecutors in New York would be able to bring those charges on the state level as well.

“I think within the first 100 days this bill will be passed,” James told NBC. “It is a priority because I have concerns with respect to the possibility that this administration might pardon some individuals who might face some criminal charges, but I do not want them to be immune from state charges.”

As she prepares to take office in January, James very well could become quite a recognizable public figure as she prepares to battle Mr. Trump and his family on multiple legal fronts.
