Hi Gail! I'm thrilled to hear your cancer results were good.

In the 90's, country crafts were popular and I found myself behind a saw cutting wood for a living.

I had an order for bunnies, and they had little thin arms. A fast easy way to make two arms, is cut one piece of wood the shape of the arm, then split it down the middle in a table saw. You end up with two thin pieces. I've done it a thousand times and probably cut 50 on this run, but this time I cheated and used a piece of scrap to make my fixture to hold them while running it thru the saw. The piece I used wasn't tall enough for me to get a good handle on it. The saw blade grabbed the piece and instead of letting it go? I tried to man-handle it. Bad choice. I hit two fingers and a thumb, they just barely hit the blade, but it was enough.

The work shop was behind the house and my wife was working when it happened. My brother worked for me and was there. I immediately went into the house and washed it off and evaluated. I knew it needed medical attention, so I wrapped my hand in a towel and my brother took me to the hospital. If you want to see the emergency room staff move fast? Walk in with a white bloody towel wrapped around your hand and tell them you cut it in a table saw. They almost jumped over the counter trying to help.

The doctor came in and gave me a shot of novocaine to kill the pain. I have never in my life felt such physical pain as that shot, except for maybe when they scrubbed and cleaned it afterwards? He was telling me to keep my hand still, I was trying......and just couldn't. He said the 3 most sensitive parts of a man's body is the tip of his nose, the tip of his penis, and the tip of his finger. I believed him completely.

When I got home, my wife was in a panic. I didn't turn off the saw, and neither did my brother. She came home to an empty shop, table saw running, and blood splattered on the ceiling.

It didn't cut off the end of my finger, just split it thru the nail. When they sewed it back together, it was quite a bit shorter. Still is. lol
