How does one identify a gold-bearing quartz?

I’ve used three ways.
Physical observation, looking for gold flakes, nuggets or wires in the quartz;
Pulverizing and panning;
Assay, chemical or fire assay of the rock itself.
Then the drilling results should answer the question if there is gold, and if so, how much.
