I believe your comment is spot on.

I think these guys a scraping the bottom of the money barrel.

The world is awash in cryptos, most of which are or were scams, see https://deadcoins.com/ so that is a direction I would not travel in.

The MJ route seems logical to me. Perhaps they can pull a rabbit out of their hat, but John Strong is an easy guy to, NOT have any faith in.
