Qrons is a Miami (FL) based company carrying on some pretty amazing research on the treatment of TBI, that is Traumatic Brain Injury. The company is developing 3D printable smart material scaffolds, innovative mesenchymal stem cell lines and a novel delivery system to repair and regenerate neuronal damage. For this research, it has now chosen to use CELLINK‘s bioprinters

Founded in 2016, Qrons is publicly traded. The company specifically works on preclinical biotechnology, developing advanced cell-based solutions to combat neurological injuries. While focused on traumatic brain injury (TBI), Qron’s technology could potentially treat a wide range of neurodegenerative diseases. Its TBI treatment integrates proprietary, engineered mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), 3D printable scaffolding, smart materials and a novel delivery system. The ultimate goal is to reduce neuronal loss and functional impairment and possibly regenerate brain tissue and function for TBI patients.

Brain damage ever since the day
In the US alone there are more than two million brain injuries each year and approximately 50,000 people die from these injuries. The direct and indirect medical costs exceed $76 billion annually. In addition, TBI exacts heavy tolls on the medical system and caregivers.

TBI can be caused by penetrating injuries, in which an object pierces the skull and directly damages the brain or non-penetrating blows that push the brain against the skull, inflicting neuronal damage. Treating patients can be difficult because each injury is different in size, shape, spread, and location. Penetrating injuries generate mechanical damage to brain tissue. Non-penetrating injuries inflict widespread neuronal disruption.

Current treatments focus on reducing secondary injuries. They can partially reduce further damage but do little or nothing to heal the brain. Most strategies are rehabilitative, helping patients adjust to their impaired cognitive state by creating workarounds, such as taking notes to compensate for lost short-term memory.

In order to repair TBIs, Qron believes that each injured site must receive a continuous flow of neuro-protective and neuro-regenerative agents. These agents will prevent further neuronal damage and have the potential to stimulate neurons to migrate to the injury site, regrow axonal processes and regenerate brain tissue. Genetically modified mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) offer a unique potential mechanism to secrete these agents to continuously and safely drive TBI repair mechanisms.

3D printing sane in the brain
Made from advanced smart materials, Qron’s 3D printable scaffold is designed to address the procedural, mechanical and personalized delivery challenges associated with TBI treatment. Its proprietary, engineered mesenchymal stem cells act like living pharmacies, continuously delivering neuro-protective and neuro-regenerative agents to affected areas. Qron uses this combination to minimize neuronal loss and ultimately help patients regain or improve function.
