Don't start off marriage being scammed. Few large purchases have less innate value than diamonds. Notice how you hear a lot about investing in gold or silver but never diamonds? They're terrible investments and can be lost or stolen. Very hard to sell if need-be.

My wife has a fake diamond that's about 8 carats. She paid about $30 for it (because she loved its looks) on some TV shopping show. No one has ever questioned its authenticity. Most women are bug eyed when they see it. Her real diamond, which is pretty big, has been in our safe about 99.9% of the time.

Nowadays almost no one can tell a real diamond from a fake.
