Actually, the control arm’s increase in LDL happened rather quickly—7 pts during the first 4 months on study, according to the NEJM supplementary data. As you probably know, some people think the mineral oil in the control arm impedes the absorption of statins, having an effect equivalent to lowering the statin dose, which would be expected to raise LDL fairly quickly.
All told, I don’t think the “placebo” issue in REDUCE-IT is a material blemish on the results, but it shouldn’t simply be brushed under the rug.
