OK.. the big boys don't usually do their own dirty work. There are hedge funds and quants that specialize in "creating liquidity". I've been seeing these spikes on volume in many stocks
VCEL is a good example - it gapped up big today so don't take this as any sort of trading recommendation.
You'll generally see VBP concentrated at the lows on the walk down (wash trading) and at the highs when the shares are transferred to the mother ship. These guys are contracted for the hit, there is a prenegotiated profit level built in. This is another reason why the stock always retraces to previous levels (until it doesn't).
