More than 10.9 million tons of REEs are in coal deposits located in nine states, including West Virginia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Coal Quality database. With that amount of REEs, said Roe-Hoan, the U.S. “would be self-sufficient” and not have to depend on imports.
