What MMEX is doing here is buying time, not the opposite as your analogy suggests. 6 months is a long time. Especially if MMEX has financing and is well on the way to being profitable by then. If that occurs, this buyback will be seen as a good move by most reasonable people. Smoking takes time off your life, this buyback/refinancing, what ever you choose to call it, adds time.
