Vozmil, the reason the big miners don't go into Cerro Rico is that the hill has been largely depleted. The bulk of the silver has been mined over the last 400+ years and there are only minor veins left. Geological reports relate this information and I have posted this before.

Bolivia gave up on the hill in 1952 for various reasons, including depletion of the silver bearing ore.

Coeur d'Alene is mining the pallacos, or silver-laden gravel deposits, at the base of Cerro Rico, not the hill itself, and that is a great indicator of where most of the remaining ore lies that is associated with Cerro Rico.

Why the information that could easily mislead the casual reader is posted so often is known only to NYBob.
