Venezuelan Journalist Unloads Devastating Fact Check After Jim Carrey Calls For Socialism

So the latest confirmed Hollywood socialist is Jim Carrey, who’s trying to redefine himself as a major political voice in addition to the guy who was last funny back in 2003. I suppose the fact that he’s now starring in the television series “Kidding,” which is directed by auteur Michel Gondry, means he’s trying to be serious. And failing.

“We have to say yes to socialism — to the word and everything,” Carrey said on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” last week.

“We have to stop apologizing.”

Here’s a video of the actor — a man worth well over $100 million — telling us all we need to get behind equally distributed suffering:

As it so happens, Laureano Márquez has a bit more experience with socialism than Jim Carrey. He’s a journalist in Venezuela, a country where the currency has been weighed instead of counted because hyperinflation makes the latter method of payment simply impossible.

In an article published in Venezuelan outlet Runrunes, Márquez chided Carrey for his comments on socialism, according to Fox News.

“Dear Jim, I admire you a lot, but sometimes it seems that the inability of Hollywood stars to understand politics is directly proportional to their talent,” Marquez wrote in the Wednesday article, according to a translation from Fox News.

“I read that … you said: ‘We have to say yes to socialism, to the word (‘socialism’) and to everything.’ Perhaps for you, as for all humanity, the word ‘socialism’ sounds beautiful,” he continued.


The journalist said that there were “deep threats” behind the facade of socialism being “the antithesis of selfishness, synonym of concern for others…support for the weakest and their needs, of seeking health and education for all.”

“(In) Venezuela, what we find is just that our regime is not — for God’s sake — the antithesis of selfishness,” he continued, describing the Venezuelan people as being “at God’s mercy.”

“In Venezuela, dear Jim, from what I have just told you, there is no equitable distribution of wealth; wealth is concentrated, as rarely before in our history, in very few hands.”


That’s why the people who aren’t members of the regime are fleeing the country “however way they can” to escape the privations caused by the government there. Indeed, 1.6 million Venezuelans have left the country since 2015, spawning a migrant crisis in nearby nations.

“(This is) a tragedy that is compounded by the denial of a regime that claims that the population has never been better.”


It’s worth noting that Venezuelan strongman Nicolás Maduro has taken steps toward acknowledging his country has lapsed into a failed state, but he still blames America for the whole mess. At least, like his predecessor Hugo Chavez, he’s consistent in this regard. He also denies that there’s a migrant crisis.

Perhaps the funniest line in Fox News’ piece is this: “A rep for Carrey did not return Fox News’ request for comment.” I wonder if he keeps his rep under socialism.

Yes, that’s a portrait of Sarah Sanders painted by Carrey. No, she doesn’t have much to do with Venezuela. But the point is that little of Carrey’s viewpoints actually cohere. They’re not supposed to. Next week, he’ll be commenting on something completely different.

Jim Carrey doesn’t know much about socialism. He doesn’t know much about anything involved with politics. But he knows what’s trendy and what will get him taken seriously by the right people.


This fact check won’t bother him, the same way no fact check ever will. The rest of us may laugh at this sort of political theatrics, but Hollywood never does.
