Well, what if there was a 50% response rate at 50 mg /day and a 75% response for 100mg/day and 90% for 200 mg / day and a placebo response rate of 10%?

Even with small trial numbers would you think such numbers would mean something?

yes they would.

So that is why they ran the trial

They just got dramatically less convincing data, is all
