Don't forget the designs in question. That packaging had ZERO eye appeal and one didn't have to be an expert in design to recognize that. It was childlike and cheap. Even an accountant could see that. It's one thing to say "generic" with your packaging, it's another to make it so it's really easy to ignore.

But can it core A apple?
