Bigworld, One aspect of today's decline that is different than in previous eras is the role of mass communication/media. The Roman decline took centuries, but with movies, TV, porn, rock music, etc, the collapse of morals and ethical standards in the 20th century took only a few years.

Add in drugs, birth control, welfare, and the road was cleared for a breakdown in the traditional family structure. I remember up to 1965/66 things were pretty normal, and then by 1969 everything went crazy. A complete unraveling occurred in just 3 years.

On their own these modern factors have the ability to break down a society, but they can also be used to purposely destabilize an entire country.

We live in an oligarchical type of system (run by finance and large corporations), and their main goal is to perpetuate oligarchy.
