gfp: A friend from work forwarded the same article to me earlier in the week. She is married to a KiWi, and their 2 daughters have dual citizenship (lucky for them). Foreign buyers. especially the Chinese, have certainly raised housing costs throughout NZ. And Australia for that matter.

Since NZ is off the table as a permanent place to reside I'll focus on developing a plan for relocation to NC. I've been looking at small parcels of land. I found one yesterday in the hills above Waynesville, maybe 30-40 minutes from Asheville. It has paved road access. 4.2 acres on a ridge top. I'd have to drill a well and put in a septic field. But the land has several viable building sites. It already has an access gate off the main paved road. Only 8 miles from Downtown Wayneville. Wherever I'd choose to build on the parcel would still leave us a nice area for a large veg garden, a chicken coop, and I'd have some forest cover as well. Very affordable at $60 k. I could situate a house to afford some very nice views over the Pisgah National Forest on toward Cold Mountain and Mt Mitchell. I may head there in early November to reconnoiter. I could almost be self sustaining if it became a survival necessity.
