I guess I was lucky. My parents had a large garden next to the garage and mom canned or froze everything she could. We had a stove and freezer in the basement and by fall that freezer was full.
Only problem I remember is that dam rhubarb came back every year and mom made rhubarb pie, bread, sauce, and anything else she could. I was over-rhubarbed!

I remember coming home from school and when walking past the garden I usually grabbed a couple of tiny yellow tomatoes. I also loved the Kohlrabi sliced with a sprinkle of salt. Onions, lettuce, radishes, asparagus, brussel sprouts, beans, peas, corn, potatoes, strawberries, and two big blueberry bushes provided most of what we needed. Cucumbers went into big crock pots with dill weed and then into jars. We also had an apple tree.

All the grass clippings were spread in the garden to hold moisture and keep the weeds down. I don't think they ever used weed killer or pesticides.

They probably started the garden during WWII.
