Wow, good to know. So the naked short is just totally orphaned. Is it possible for someone to involuntarily hold a naked short position then, like if there were no shares for borrow at brokerage and somehow the trade went through in error? If that isn't possible then I'd see naked shorting as an impossibility for joe-shmoe traders and entirely a MM+broker collusion/conspiracy scheme.
