Everything the House Republicans say at this point is all political posturing
They have to put on a show for their base of voters
The reality is that the Senate passed their Farm Bill with the most historically lopsided margin of all time — 86 to 11
You don’t get more bipartisan support than that
The House passed their version 213-211 on a strictly partisan basis, with zero Democratic votes
There are 4 Agriculture Committee Chairpeople, 2 in the Senate (Stabenow/Roberts) and 2 in the House (Conaway/Peterson), 1 Repub and 1 Dem apiece
The House Dem, Peterson, joins both members of the Senate — Repub Roberts and Dem Stabenow in rejecting the House SNAP cuts
So that’s a 3-1 vote in favor of the Senate version from the pool of Agriculture Committee chairpeople
The other huge factor is McConnell —he is the boss of the Republican Party and he doesn’t support SNAP cuts
Now the vote is 4-1 in favor of the Senate version with no SNAP cuts from the most important people negotiating this issue (I would count Paul Ryan as the 6th member of this core group, but he is a lame duck because he has already announced his retirement after the midterm elections)
And Mitch is definitely lined up to benefit financially from Hemp Legalization with all of his Kentucky farmer connections
You really think Mitch is going to get this close to Hemp Legalization, the prestige that comes with his role in legalizing it, and a huge payday, and let it slip away?
The House has minimal leverage, the largely Republican farmers are screaming from the retaliation tariffs on American agriculture and Trump is trying to avoid impeachment proceedings in the new House if Dems win a majority
I say once this gets to Conference, the House is going to fold like a cheap suit
