New opportunities for mulberry

A series of research and development activities promising to ensure stable output for silkworm silk products of Quang is being implemented by US investors.

The project of the Center for Research and Development of Silkworm Silk in Dai Hiep Commune (Dai Loc) is being deployed to quickly put into operation. This is a US $ 50 million investment funded by US biotech-based Kraig Biocraft Laboratories (KBL).

Application of high technology

Mr. Jon Rice, KBL's Operations Director, said that Quang Nam was selected as the first locality in the world for KBL to carry out its investment activities in the field of high-tech silk production.

"We chose Quang Nam for a lot of reasons. First of all, this is a locality with a long tradition of growing mulberry and silkworm silkworm. We are aware that the provincial authorities are very keen to restore this profession in the localities along the Thu Bon - Vu Gia River to contribute to the restructuring of the crop, to strengthen the protection of the eroded land along the river. At the same time, tourism should be integrated to improve the lives of people. In addition, the climate parameters, soil compatibility to our silkworm re-development is consistent with Quang Nam. Other resources such as infrastructure, people ... have ensured that we can carry out the project, "said Jon Rice.

During the implementation of the project, KBL Company would like to bypass the experimental stage in Quang Nam to directly import genetically modified silkworms from the United States. However, the Ministry of Science and Technology has recommended that KBL consult and follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Biosafety Regulation in research and development of technology of genetically modified organisms. . Pham Viet Tich, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, said that the import of this hybrid silkworm must be recognized as being eligible for importation into Vietnam without harming the environment or harming the mulberry. silkworms in water.
KBL has conducted a survey in Quang Nam from January 2017 with the expectation of high-tech silk production on the basis of imported silkworm variety Bombyx Mori, crossbred with local silkworms to transfer to local people. feed. KBL wants to connect with farmers to develop the mulberry growing area of ??more than 200 hectares and buy all of the cocoons from the local people to produce raw silk to ensure that people's income is higher than the current crop. in. Jon Rice added that KBL had a contract with the US Department of Defense to supply raw materials for the military. With more durable, folding features than other fibers, KBL has produced silk yarn testing from this hybrid hybrid in the US and is now looking for partners to meet the requirements. wide-area production.

According to the plan, the Center for Research and Development of Silkworm Silk is expected to be divided into different phases, in which the focus will be on the construction of Silkworm Complex in Dai Hiep Commune, Dai Loc district, with an area of ??50 hectares.

Here, KBL will build high quality mulberry nurseries to feed silkworms and provide seedlings to cooperatives and households. In parallel with this, the Seed Research Center will be established to produce high quality silkworm silkworms.

In the future, KBL plans to cooperate with local authorities, cooperatives and farmer households in Dai Loc, Dien Ban, Duy Xuyen ... to grow berries for long-term development and operation. of the project, with an expected mulberry plantation area of ??2,000 - 2,500ha.

Province supports project development

Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Dinh Van Thu said that the development of high-tech agriculture is a great concern of Quang Nam. Local interest and expectation on high-tech mulberry development project, because it is not only about economic development, it is also related to a traditional profession, a cultural mark of Quang Nam.

"I hope that the successful project will create jobs for local people, contribute to the rejuvenation of traditional silkworm rearing and re-branding of silk in Quang Nam," said Dinh Van Thu.

At present, there are 5 hectares of mulberry plantations in Dien Quang to serve the development of new hybrid silkworms. Jon Rice said that the hybrid of Bombyx Mori was approved by the US Department of Agriculture. At present, they are awaiting verification results from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam to import directly this silkworm into Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Quang people are looking forward to the silkworm silk development project will quickly start.

Mr. Doan Ngoc Quang - Vice Chairman of Dai Loc District People's Committee said that soon after the information of KBL will invest in the silkworm silk project in the locality, Dai Loc quickly selected the project area. from the planning of industrial development of the locality.

"Both the government and the local people are happy to hear about the project will invest in Dai Loc. We expect the project to start in order to restore a traditional local craft, "said Doan Ngoc Quang.

KBL is completing the legal procedures to expedite the project and launch the silk line to meet the growing demand of the international market.

With a view to continue supporting the project implementation, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Dinh Van Thu extends the duration of KBL's research and survey to 31.12.2018.

"During this time, the owner must obtain a certificate from the Ministry of Science and Technology on the import of hybrid silkworms from the United States for the purpose of development and development within the framework of the project. Under the current Land Law, the province can not temporarily allocate land in accordance with the wishes of the investor; However, the province will direct the support to investors in terms of procedures, consultancy, and willingness to support the research and development of the project. The lease of land with investors for 50 years will be carried out after the investor successfully carried out experiments, rearing hybrid silkworms and recognized by competent state agencies "- Mr. Dinh Van Thu added.
