it is fiber whose flexibility has been tested and quantified
Yes, the fiber has. Have you seen the quantified results of these tests?
it is too flexible to be used, as is, in a bullet proof vest
This is your opinion. Is it coming from your extensive experience in materials science?
I don’t think its going to significantly matter how you weave it
Well there's your problem right there. Just because you don't think it will matter, doesn't mean it doesn't matter. Example: carbon fiber golf shafts only bend in the direction the engineers want them to bend by creating different directional weaves.
the army does this for a living
Exactly. So let them test these shoot packs before we make claims that it's too elastic.
they tested the fibers and requested a custom fiber with specs they feel are more appropriate
Did they ever once say it was too elastic? Because I've only read that they wanted even more strength.
ds is a new form of fiber...but it isn’t extraterrestrial...it isn’t going to defy the laws of physics
You're correct. Probably won't defy the laws of physics, and probably not from outer space. But a fiber with these properties has never been woven and tested for ballistics before, at least not to my knowledge. The thing about the elasticity of spider silk compared to the elasticity of synthetic fibers is that spider silk only begins to flex after a substantial amount of force is applied. So comparing flexibility of spider silk to the flexibility of other fibers isn't apples to apples even if the percent elongation is the same. "When" it flex's is a very important variable. This can be seen in spider silks unique Young's modulus and tensile profiles. So, while not extra terrestrial or physics defying, it is very different than what has ever been tested before.
i doubt the army wants to use a too flexible fiber and weave the flex out of it...probably they would want to start with a fiber that already has the right specs to begin with..
You are correct. That would be dumb.
it’s too flexable..
Good thing the army is going to test it instead of going off your opinion.
