There's very little shorting done nowadays. Even so called "hedge funds" don't short much anymore.

Buffett (my hero) has been asked a number of times about the role of shorters in the markets and he said it wasn't a big deal. Back during the Great Recession period (2008-2010) Buffet was often asked to comment on shorting. Shorting has been outlawed in some places and for some periods.

Outlaw shorting and bad stocks will still fall.
