Beijing, China, 20 Oct – China imported 38.34 million tons of oil from Africa in 2005, which accounted for 30 percent of the country’s total oil imports, the Commission for National Reform and Development said in Beijing.
At the end of 2005, China had invested in large oil and natural gas projects in 14 countries, including the Sudan, Algeria, Angola and Nigeria, said Zhang Yuqing, the deputy director of the Commission’s energy department.
China’s economic growth over the last two decades has led to an increase in its need for oil.
Official figures showed that China imported 126.82 million tons of oil in 2005 and imports in the first 8 months of 2006 totaled 95.80 million tons, accounting for a year on year rise of 15.3 percent.
In 2005, Saudi Arabia was China’s largest oil supplier, with sales of 22.18 million tons, followed by Angola with 17.46 million tons. (macauhub)
