A father and his young son cope with the mental illness of a wife and mother in this affecting portrait of an embattled family. CANVAS trades on small moments when hope alternates with frustration and love overcomes embarrassment. Joe Pantoliano stars as a John Marino, a Florida construction worker struggling to make ends meet, bring up his son Chris (Devon Gearhart) and deal with the increasing irrationality of his schizophrenic wife Mary (Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden). For Chris, his mother's erratic behavior begins to have negative consequences at school. And, after Mary's hospitalization, a lonely John begins to build a sailboat that recalls a happier time in his life. Underlying the relationship between father and son is the belief that Mary will be better and the fear that she never will. Writer-director Joseph Greco pulls back on the emotional reins to underscore his points and in return receives perfectly calibrated performances from his three leads. Shot on location in Hollywood Beach, FL, the film survived two tropical storms and Hurricane Wilma.
