Hey waffles, I will share about a journey I went on involving rabbit’s histamine receptors and the relationship to opioids...

Basically there are studies to suggest that a number of overdoses are because of a giant histamine response and could’ve been remedied with antihistamine use prior to self administration. Think about that. There is a way to die from heroin other than the usual suspects of acute respiratory depression etc..

You don’t really come across people in day today life that would love to hear about the theories between rabbits and heroin.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24576327/

So to summarize link:

“has been speculated that such deaths might be caused by an allergic reaction”

they basically found that some overdosed, deceased users had non lethal levels of the drug in their system and were thought to have died of a giant allergic reaction aka: anaphylaxis , aka: giant histamine response.

Think of the implications of this.. the gap between the medical and science community and the layman has caused a huge oversight. What I’m understanding is antihistamines can be used as a harm reduction tool to prevent the susceptible population of opioid users that die of allergic responses (anaphylaxis etc.) instead of conventional respiratory depression. It’s value could be comparable to Naloxone one day. Ok I’m stretching it I know but let’s just go with it. Even beginning the process of fantasizing because why a not

If used antihistamines can be used as an overdose preventative in a population of addicts that are susceptible to fatal histamine reactions. I don’t think anyone has gone down this road...

Remember part of withdrawal is a giant histamine release, for example:
- runny nose
- watery eyes
- sneezing

So equally crazy is the use of heroin CAUSES histamine reactions as well ( i theorize and it’s somewhat supported)

Like itchiness for example..

So a cue or trigger that could be used to determine the population of IV opioid more susceptible to death by anaphylaxis could be the 'hives’ reaction (histamine response) around injection sites when they use.

If they get the hives when they inject opioids, that could determine right there that they are experiencing a negative histamine reaction and could serve as a warning of susceptibility to the fatal histamine reaction ( anaphylaxis ) . The issue would be finding a way to exclude the other possibilities of why hives were manifesting in IV users .. ie: hot water, cut in product etc..
