Yes, I thought after I posted that I should have included real estate as a good holding. Growth has exploded here on Cape Cod in the past 50 years. It probably has where you live, too. In the late fifties and early 60's, middle class houses were selling for $12-$15,000 and are worth $200,000 or a little more now. Lots were cheap and have achieved similar price appreciation. But I wouldn't expect the same meteoric appreciation with real estate if purchased today.
