I suspect Intel is doing something exotic that no one else is trying yet and that is the reason for this extended delay. When Intel has the recipe down they will have something no one else has. Just a guess but an educated one...

Everyone knows Intel's 10nm process has been delayed...and delayed...and delayed. But no one knows exactly why.

Intel has been the master of process for several decades. I find it difficult to believe that they have somehow failed...and failed spectacularly just recently. When all other reasons don't make any sense, there is only one possibility left.

Elmer, I think you have hit the nail on the head. I have long suspected that Intel is doing something that none of us are aware of. I suspect this has to do with EMIB (and its newest version that is going to be launched shortly as mentioned by Murthy Renduchintala at the recent JP Morgan conference). And I further suspect that Intel will be introducing CPUs with DRAM/eDRAM/3DXP in a single package. This will completely change the processor market with no further talk of processor nodes, at least in the near to medium term.
