WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. -- It looks like a whistle, but it’s actually a device used to inhale insulin. It’s called Afrezza and it’s the needle-free option for those with diabetes. Little packs that look like gum hold the insulin, which are then placed into the device.
Eric Fenar has been using it for a few years now. Fenar was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was just 10 years old. He calls Afrezza the "biggest kept secret in the diabetes community." Not only does it bring high blood sugar levels down quicker, it also is out of the system in less than an hour.
"I really call it the perfect diabetic marriage,” Fenar said. “You have real-time blood sugars but now you have a real-time insulin, because there is really nothing worse than when you see your blood sugar going high and there's nothing you can do about it."
Right now, Afrezza is only available for those 18 and older. There is, however, active recruitment for kids four to 17 years old to join a clinical trial to see if it’s safe for them.
