Yet every investor has seen an unexplained spike (up or down) in price followed by some (unexpected) news that previously wasn't public.

I've seen way too many cases of stocks spiking and dipping with no news. It's the "som1 noes sumting" phenomenon. Rarely does anyone know anything.

And while it is consistent that people "in the know" wouldn't be able to divulge that they are in the know, if there's no evidence for this sort of price manipulation, then I cannot trust its veracity, particularly in light of the wild swings I've observed that precipitated nothing, news-wise.
