Lucent Technologies to Supply Long-Haul Optical Network Equipment for Use on
TyCom Global Network

One-Year, $90-Million Agreement Is First for Lucent to Supply
Optical Network System for TyCom Global Network

MURRAY HILL, N.J., July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU)
today announced a one-year, $90-million agreement with TyCom Ltd. (NYSE: TCM)
for optical networking systems and services, with potential upgrades of more
than $50 million. The agreement includes deployment of the Lucent WaveStar(R)
OLS 1.6T optical networking system in the TyCom Global Network (TGN).
This is the first optical networking system agreement between TyCom and
Lucent for the TyCom Global Network and includes engineering and installation
from Lucent Worldwide Services.
Initially, Lucent will deliver the WaveStar(R) OLS 800G system that will
be incorporated in TGN's West Coast routes in the United States and in routes
in Japan and southern Europe, extending to more than 6,000 kilometers
(3,728 miles). The system is expected to be deployed by the third quarter of
2002 and will enable TyCom to offer new high-bandwidth capacity to its
customers.
The OLS 800G system has a capacity of 800 gigabits per second (Gb/s),
equivalent to transmitting 10 million simultaneous phone calls -- or
160 million one-page e-mail messages -- every second. The OLS 800G system,
developed by Lucent Bell Labs, can be doubled in size to a 1.6T system without
disrupting existing service. The 1.6T system can transmit 1.6 terabits of
information per second.
"Our goal is to provision high-quality, high-reliability broadband
capacity to our customers, and the WaveStar systems will help make this
possible," said Robert Paski, TyCom's vice-president of network engineering
and operations. "This is another example of a best-in-class product that we're
integrating into the TyCom Global Network to ensure the highest levels of
service."
Barry Weinbaum, general manager, optical long-haul solutions for Lucent's
Optical Networking Group, said, "This system will enable TyCom to overcome the
challenge of carrying the various types of voice and data traffic that their
customers require. TyCom will be able to drive down the cost of transmitting
bits while also pushing the capacity limits of fibers."
The OLS 800G is based on dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM)
technology. DWDM provides enormous capacity by simultaneously transmitting
multiple wavelengths -- or colors -- of light across a single fiber strand,
with each color carrying a distinct stream of information. The 800G system can
provide up to 80 10-Gb/s wavelengths (equivalent to 320 2.5-Gb/s wavelengths).
The Lucent 800G system can be upgraded to a 1.6T system by using the
"L-Band" optical amplifier, a Bell Labs innovation that allows network
providers to transmit traffic through a previously unused wavelength range in
a fiber. Using the amplifier to open up this previously untapped bandwidth,
which had been highly susceptible to dispersion of light, the service provider
can double the number of wavelengths transmitted on the fiber from 80 to 160.
A combiner/splitter, also developed by Bell Labs, first separates the
wavelengths and then brings them together. The latest version of the Lucent
long-haul optical networking system also allows service providers to transmit
duplicate wavelengths, which ensures that the strongest signal will arrive on
the receiving end, in case service is interrupted.

About Lucent Technologies
Lucent's Bell Labs has garnered more than 2,500 patents in optical
technology alone. Lucent was first to market with a DWDM system in 1995, and
has since shipped more DWDM systems than any other vendor. Lucent also was
first to market with an all-optical switch.
Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., USA, designs and
delivers the systems, software and services for next-generation communications
networks for service providers and enterprises. Backed by the research and
development of Bell Labs, Lucent focuses on high-growth areas such as
broadband and mobile Internet infrastructure; communications software;
Web-based enterprise solutions that link private and public networks; and
