bottom line - looking at the situation from a physics perspective - matter = energy. All the energy at our disposal comes directly or indirectly from hydrogen fusing into helium at the center of our sun.
if we value diversity of life and new experiences and space to live (or cannabis), then we will end up building habitations that orbit the sun separately from earth, in order to capture that much more energy for life.
If you are going to have habitations that absorb the energy emitted from the sun, well the absolutely least mass efficient way to d, o that is with a sphere....you cannot possibly conceive of any shape that gives you less surface area for a given amount of mass - another way to define a sphere is the minimum amount of surface area per unit of volume....
we are going to end up building pairs of cylinders, rotating counter to one another to negate precession - this will provide us gravity, millions of times more space to live on for a given amount of mass, more energy - more life, more cannabis
when you get right down to it, the earth is just not the ideal shape and size to support life in our solar system, but it is a good start
I really like Elon Musk and SpaceX - but the idea of colonizing and terraforming Mars is weak - he should be going for asteroid mining and space manufacturing
