By outsourcing their IT infrastructure to the cloud, SiteSecurityMonitor.com's founder and president,Jason Remillard, has been able to rapidly expand its client base. - John Turley-Ewart/Financial Post

When Jason Remillard lands a new client, he doesn't need to worry about calling his information technology department to tell them to start investing in new servers to accommodate the new account.

Instead, the infrastructure is already there, available and ready to be used. It just doesn't belong to him.

As the founder and president of SiteSecurityMonitor.com(SSM), Mr. Remillard's clients look to him to keep a watchful eye on their websites, ensuring they haven't been hacked or been converted into havens for viruses and malware by unscrupulous culprits. Scanning a website for unwelcome viruses can be a computing power-intensive operation for any company's data centre. Some sites contain upward of 10,000 Web pages, and with SSM's technology putting each page through 135,000 tests, Mr. Remillard would be facing a rising tide of capital costs if he had to buy new servers to have the necessary IT horsepower to scan every page of every new client's site.

But because SSM's technology utilizes an on-demand cloud-based architecture, Mr. Remillard is able to grow the size of his server capacity -- by essentially leasing more real estate inside the vast server farms operated by Amazon.comInc. --in a matter of minutes. "As our volumes have increased because of the scanning requests, I can just add instances with a mouseclick, essentially giving us an exceptionally large amount of scale quickly," he said. "And I can turn them off later when I don't need them anymore."

By outsourcing their IT infrastructure to the cloud, SSM and its 10 employees have been able to rapidly expand its client base from its Markham, Ontario headquarters to include companies from as far away as China, India and the United Kingdom.

"We had initially started doing dedicated servers with a myriad of providers," Mr. Remillard said. "We consolidated in the cloud because of economies of scale and the ability to ramp up and down quickly, which the dedicated guys cannot do very well."
