Very well stated with one minor exception. Naked shorting in Canada was stopped a few years ago. Today the locatioon of many naked shorters is Spain,the Isle of Man and Germany. In particular the German Bourse considers nakeed shorting to be legal. U.S. Government tried to intervene in this situation but were rebuffed.
When the new NMKT shares are issued they will be in exchange for registered shares on the books of the transfer agent. That requires the CUSIP number on each certificate to be validated. Narked shares have no such number so the supposed owner will not recieve anything-remember he really doesn't hold anything. Although this merger shall eliminate the existing naked short overhang it shall still be possible that nakerd short positionms in the newly issued stock could appear.
