This is a very back of the envelope calculation to demonstrate the importance of reducing weight of aircraft and the benefits it provides in fuel consumption.
What the savings are depends on a range of assumptions, however, if we back calculate for reasonableness:
If we assume a 1kg reduction in weight saves $1,000,000 over the life of the aircraft, and assume 20,000 flights over the aircraft life (the 35,000 assumption is the total useful life - very few aircraft get to that point – that equates to 3 flights per day, every day of the year for 40 years!!) , then you’re talking about the 1kg weight loss saving you $50 per flight….sounds in the ball park.
