More than 90% of all startup companies fail. More than 90% of scientific startup projects fail. For centuries, humans crafted wings thought to make them fly. They jumped off high places and towers etc. only to go splat! Therefore, baby steps leading to nowhere are where the >90% of startups lead. I would not put much into the fact that a few startups greatly succeeded while the overwhelming majority fail.
