The E.B. White story reminds me of one I read to my boys when they were in grade school. It was about a soldier in the Korean War whose foxhole buddy was a German Shepherd. The dog was his constant companion and friend. In a fierce attack by the enemy the dog's heroic actions saved the man and his squad and in doing so suffered grievous wounds. The soldier carried the dog from the front lines for treatment, encouraging and pleading for the dog to hang on but it died in his arms on the way. He fell to his knees and wept terribly. The dog was buried there with the grateful squad honoring him.

I can still see their reaction and mine, the emotion we felt.
